Yumi Extraordinary Collection edition by Elsa Takaoka Catherine Toennisson Literature Fiction eBooks
"Yumi's Extraordinary Collection" is a lovely and endearing story about the Ozaki family and their tradition of collecting (or possibly hoarding). Their tradition of collecting would get passed down from one generation to the other. Each individual collected a variety of items like whirligigs, sticks, origami, teacups, hats, frogs, kokeshi dolls, and many more. While everyone shared their collection, little Yumi would sit and draw. Yumi wondered why she didn't have a collection like everyone else. Yumi loved to draw so much she would draw while listening to everyone's stories. One summer day, Yumi surprised her Grandma Sayuri with her numerous drawings. With Grandma Sayuri's help, Yumi realized her drawings were of everyone's memories. Like her family members, Yumi had been collecting memories all along. When this book arrived, my daughter immediately picked it up and began reading the story to herself. I think the illustrations first caught her attention because the drawings were very cute and sweet looking. As a homeschooling mother, I appreciated this story is about a Japanese family. Our family loves to read many stories, but we are being cognizant to read more diverse stories from all backgrounds and culture. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading a sweet story about a Japanese family who loves to collect things.

Yumi Extraordinary Collection edition by Elsa Takaoka Catherine Toennisson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I was given a copy of this book by the author to review. Yumi is a Japanese American girl who is looking for a collection. Like her grandmother, she is a story-teller, but Yumi tells stories through her art. To connect with her sick grandmother Yumi begins drawing her grandmother's stories. She the pastes the drawings in her grandmother's hospital room. The story make connections between multiple generations of a family and shows them supporting one another. The illustrations are also charming, highlighting Yumi's own vibrant art and the collections of her family members. One of my favorite parts is the cat who appears on several pages. I do wish we knew what happened to grandma at the end of the story. #ReadYourWorld
This book is about a young girl, Yumi, whose family has had a habit of acquiring unusual collections for generations. However, Yumi is not interested in collecting objects. Instead, she likes to make drawings. Yumi's grandmother, Sayuri, ends up in the hospital, so Yumi has a great idea. She decides to collect her family's memories about Sayuri and make drawings of them. When she presents her collection of memories to Sayuri, she proclaims that Yumi's collection is "extraordinary!" I really enjoyed how Yumi finds a way to fit in with her family's tradition of collecting, but still express herself in the way she likes to. The story simultaneously expresses family values and individuality. Students who love art and drawing, or connect with stories about family and ancestors, would really enjoy this book!
*I was given a pdf copy of the book to review by the author* Beautiful and gorgeous illustrations in a heartwarming story about a young girl and her grandma. A touching story of how young Yumi tries to find her own unique way in a family of collectors while visiting her grandma in the hospital one summer. As she discovers more about her family, traditions and herself through the process we are reminded of the importance of connection between generations.
I would recommend this book to those who have grandparents in their lives as it can open the conversation with kids about ailing grandparents. In the story Yumi creates an incredible keepsake of her grandmother's life.
I love the colorful illustrations in this picture book, and the warmth that they all exude. You can't help but feel as if you have been sucked right into the very heart of a large, loving Japanese family as you turn the pages. The story is also one that will have you smiling. Little Yumi already has a passion for drawing, but she feels different from the rest of her family and ancestors simply because she doesn't COLLECT anything. As the story unfolds we discover how Yumi starts her own collection, and why this becomes such a precious and "extraordinary" collection.
Young readers or listeners will enjoy following Yumi's story, and will all no doubt be able to relate to feeling different from others around them at some point. This is a reassuring tale, which shows children that being yourself and being different needn't be a bad thing at all. And sometimes simply following your own heart and your own interests can help you achieve something extraordinary!
I also loved that the illustrations and a few words in the book (all clearly explained by the text or illustrations) even introduce children to a tiny piece of Japanese culture.
This would make a great, comforting bedtime story, and is sure to leave both adults and children with warm smiles on their faces.
Disclosure I was gifted a copy of this eBook in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Four words in the book, Yumi’s Extraordinary Collection, by Elsa Takaota, describe it best—fantastic, whimsical, vivid and artistic. This charming book touches so many areas—multicultural, multigenerational, family traditions. I especially liked the page picturing older sister Hannah with her collection of Japanese kokeshi dolls. This story makes a great writing prompt for stories about collecting things or writing oral histories. This book is a welcome addition to children’s literature dealing with an Asian culture, especially since it also falls in the genre of realistic fiction. The colorful illustrations are very engaging. This is a book that will have children reading the story, looking back at the pictures, and then reading it again. My only regret is that it is not available in a hardcover edition.
Full disclosure I was given free copies in exchange for an honest review.
